Thank you for all the posts. As I suspected the opinions varied greatly! I will get my buddy to bring in his small collection of 22s and give them a try but I have to say that I like the fact that I "can't" lose the tube fed mag very easily. Anyway, when I get some range time in I'll let you know!
Right now I am a function over form guy, but I did go to able ammo and looked at their vast catalog of 22s.. some of those tactical ones look pretty wicked. ;D maybe one day?

Don't want to get in a shoot out with a .22 either, but to borrow from WC," pity the foo" who thinks a single shot from a .22 won't put him in the grave.
I have a Brother, an Uncle and an Aunt in their graves because of a .22.
There are many "sniper" stories yet untold for the .22
Just sayin'

You also can't go wrong with the price for .22 ammo. You can get a brick of 500 rounds for 19.99 at wolly world. 555 packs here are 21.97 but you can get 333 packs for 9.87. do the math its cheaper to buy the smaller packs. get a 111 more rounds for about 2 bucks less.

Yeah, but that's the Winchester "worst ammo ever" type. I've 2/3 of a box of that stuff (guess you'd call that a 222 pack), and I'll never buy it again. Just doesn't run well in my rifles. Even the 10/22 has hiccups with it. Plus when it does run, it's less accurate.

My next purchase, at the recommendation of CWI was a Henry H001. It will shoot s,l,lr and you can mix and match them in tube. This is the same rifle that I would recommend. I have always favored the lever action rifles and the Henry H001 is an excellent rifle.

I consider that 22LR the self defense rifle of last resort. It's what I'll use when I don't have any other rifles. Yes the ammo is light and yes you can kill people and game with it but I would rather have my AR and the increased range it offers me plus a bigger bullet.
But as far as tube versus magazine I have both. Tube is fine for target shooting but I don't like to hunt with a round in the chamber. With a magazine it is easy to take out the unused round and not have to put another one in the chamber. In semi autos it is a real pain with tubes. I then end up locking the bolt open which when I need to chamber a round doesn't always release easy. Dropping the mag, cycling the action, then replacing the mag is just too easy.
The advantage of high capacity mags isn't really in my favor living in California where we are limited to ten round mags but even though I would rather have the mag. Carry more than one and if you lose one you'll still have extras.

Well since this post I've shot a couple different Ruger 10/22s and Marlins. Most of them were semi autos. They were sweet for sure. One of the Marlins was a lever action a Model LR. I really liked it too. One of the guns I hadn't considered was a Henry. I shot the golden boy and man that was one sweet gun. If I had unlimited funds I'd go for the Henry Golden Boy or the Marlin lever action. But my funds are a bit limited. One step down from the Golden Boy is the Henry H001. I think the Henry H001 lever action might be the 22 for me. Anyone with an opinion on the Henry? Big

Of them all, the Henry is hands down the best quality construction. Solid steel without a bit of plastic or aluminum on it as far as I can tell. My grandkids will probably end up handing this thing down to their kids. It's a rock solid work horse. Not the most accurate or fastest shooting of my .22s, but a dependable performer. On the down side, I prefer a stainless steel/ aluminum .22 as a bug out gun due to its ability to function in adverse weather conditions longer than a blued gun. A week or two outdoors here in Florida would probably render my Henry into a rusted pile of junk if I wasn't able to oil it every day. It literally rains about every day here and is just sloppy wet most of the summer. If they made a stainless Henry H001, I wouldn't own another .22.

Thanks Will and Mud... very strong endorsements for the Henry. Will, I live close to the Pacific ocean but the humidity is pretty low here and I have not had any issues with corrosion on any of my other guns or vehicles. So while stainless would be a cool upgrade I don't think I'll need it here. I put my order in tonight! ;D Now I have to wait! Big

I shoot the Henry survival rifle 22. It does the job very well, but I do prefer a tube feed . Unless I have a hand full of high capacity clips.

As I said before, I favor the tube feds. I like them so much I bought another one this past weekend at the gun show. I finally found a Henry pump LR with the octagon barrel. It is a beautiful little gun. I have been looking for one for almost a year. After I get to shoot it I will let you know how it does. Even if it won't shoot, it will make a pretty wall hanger. LOL

Picked up my Henry H001 from Dicks Sporting goods. With all the freaking paperwork that has to be PERFECT in Kalifornia, it's a wonder that any sell at all. I must say though that the gun section of Dicks was overflowing with eager purchasers.
Oh and the particularly odd thing about this purchase was that the guy at the gun case had to walk it out the front door for me and had to sell me a gun lock before I could take it out of the building. So I put the gun in my trunk and returned the lock for refund.
Got it home and cleaned it. It was fairly clean compared to other guns I've purchased. I'm hoping to get to the range near my office after work this week or maybe on the coming weekend. I'M SO STOKED - great 4th of July! ;D
