I thought I would be cheap and buy a Rayovac headlamp at Wally-World. It was and I went to use it this past weekend (for second time) and it is shot-kaput-dead. I am in the process of replacing it and found a couple on Amazon (Led Lenser 880002 H7 and the 300 Lumen Forehead Bonfire 3 mode ultrabright Cree) reasonably priced. Both have high ratings and if anyone has one of these how is it? What do you use? Thanks Jim

I have several of the latter and and they have given me excellent service. They were about $18 IIRC, take 3 AAA. Even has the red led. Jimmy

I am not close to many outdoor stores. I live in northern NH right on the Canadian border where VT/NH/PQ meet up. I am 2 -3 hours from anywhere I just have to rely on ratings and advice from friends on here ;D

I'm partial to Petzel. I have SEVEN of them. They're bright (NOT 300 lumens), rugged, and reliable.

I have to agree with TJ on this one. I myself am partial to Petzel. Never a problem. Another option that has worked for me in the past are these headbands from Nite-ize.

According to my sales slip I paid 6.99 for it. It does take 3 AAA and has 5 LED lamps (all white), 35 lumens with two modes (11 lumens power saver mode). Oh well, I can't condemn all Rayovacs as there could be a bad one once in a while. There is a lifetime guaranty but for 7 bucks I will eat it. Jim

I've got a surefire saint minimus that's 100 lumens otf, but I don't really like it. gave it to my wife & bought me a Petz taktikka. Best one I've owned. runs on 3 AAA & has white lens, with red, blue, green, & diffuser lens covers for around $50 couple bucks at basspro.

Use the 3 led, 1 krypton bulb ones from Cabela's at work. They've put up with a ton of abuse there an keep workin fine. Don't remember what they cost, they weren't real cheap but been super reliable. They use 3 AA batteries an the battery pack be on the back side a the harness so yer not carryin all the weight up on yer forehead.

I'm a big fan of the Petzl Tacktikka XP. It has spent a lot of time on my head over the past 8 years. I did have to replace the headband after the first 6 years, but that only involved a $6 part and about 3 minutes of my time.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

i have the led lenser and one thing i will say about it is it is BRIGHT, but not only can you change the beam focus you can also reduce the lumen output too, from full brightness to almost 0 output, very useful under certain conditions.
the light itself is also hinged so if reading at night you dont have to have your neck cricked at an unatural angle to make the beam hit the paper

I ended up getting a PETZL TAKTIKKA (1 red diffuser). Very nice light. The other one is the LED Lenser H7. I really like it, since it is very bright, has the little battery pack in the back to even the weight( what there is), and comes with a carrying case. Thanks to all for your suggestions. Jim

I have purchased several headlamps over the years. Between biking, hiking, camping, BOBs and survival gear I must have purchased about 15+ headlamps.
Definitely go for LED (obvious). I'm not overly impressed by any one brand, but I prefer those that take 2 AAA batteries (vs 3 AAA) for BOB purposes it is easier to make use of spare batteries when in even numbers.....
I find that usually when I spend around $20- $30 at an outdoors store on a headlamp I am never disappointed.
there are those that would advocate "stocking" extra headlamps as a commodity during SHTF. I cannot disagree. Whether you just loan or rent them to members of your group, keep backups for yourself or barter them away for food or supplies, there are few items I can think of that would be more handy to have besides matches, lighters, food, and headlamps (with spare batteries of course!!!)

I have a 20 year old 3AA Petzl headlamp with an incandescent bulb and just last winter I bought a Tikka2xp Petzl, great little headlamp, takes 3 AAA, numerous modes, red, white, filterred, beam, flashing.. At $50 I am happy with it.
