It's not been very good for wtrfwlr so far but I still have 11 days left. Today was pretty dang cold, for me anyway, it was 23* with spitting sleet and snow and a good stiff North wind to drive it home. I was really bummed last night cause my repairs on my chest waders did nothing but that was for naught since I fell in the water unloading the boat before daylight this morning! ShuuuWeee that made for a really cold hunt today. What made it colder was everything in the boat was froze solid and as soon as I broke it loose and it got wet again......yep, froze again! I went to a real good spot and set up the decoys, parked the boat, and was going to get out on the bank and had to bust my waders free cause they were frozen to the boat seat and the bottom of the boat. I went ahead and made it till 10:00 AM and since I hadn't seen a single duck the whole morning I decided to go home and get warm again. Oh well, 11 more days of this madness and it will all be over for the year. Dang! A whole nother year before I get to do this all again

You said you fell in with waders on. Did the water rush in or did you have the draw string pulled tight to your chest. Same thing happened to me when wade fishing a stream, tripped on a rock and the cold water rushed in and took my breath away. Sure was wide awake after that ;D ;D ;D Man I would love to spend a day with you ;D ;D

Hang in there, a lot can happen in 11 days.
Scary thing about falling in water with waders. Please be extra careful riding with waders on while it's still dark. You never know what obstacles are floating in the water to cause your boat to flip.
Several years ago a hunter I knew had the same thing happen to him while on his way to do some duck hunting. It was dark and the temps were low, his boat flipped and the chest waders filled with water and weighted him down with water over his head causing him to drown.
Come daylight and he hadn't returned at his usual hour, a search for him found him on the bottom of the bayou.

From someone that has spent years in chest waders. If you keep the draw string or belt tight to the body. Trapping air in the waders and keeping the water out you will not sink, you will float. But be warned eventually from the motion of swimming and depending how tight the seal is, water will start creeping in. Most people i see using waders just leave the top opened allowing water to rush into the waders.....game over.

But be warned eventually from the motion of swimming and depending how tight the seal is, water will start creeping in. Most people i see using waders just leave the top opened allowing water to rush into the waders.....game over. These waders are much different than the waders that are used by fishermen. These have no drawstrings or such on them, they have shoulder straps that hold them up. They are also made out of Neoprene not the thin rubber material like fishing waders. This stuff is the same material that SCUBA wetsuits are made from mine are 5mm. thick. They are very buoyant, you would float like a cork in these things. They are also really warm and if there is water in them (like my leakin ones) the water warms from your body temp. Now I'm not saying that you can't drown or freeze in these things but they aren't dangerous water weights that take you straight to the bottom either. I fall down in the woods duck hunting all the dang time but its usually in water that's knee deep or less. If its a whole lot deeper than that I'm in my boat or leaned up against a tree calling birds. Is it dangerous? Yes it is. Your having to deal with water and cold temps so you have to pay attention and be careful about what you do and do not do while your out there. I don't consider it any more dangerous than any other outdoor activity really. Be careful, be prepared and know what the heck your doing. There's always things that can happen, you just do your best to prevent it or know what to do when it happens. There's just nothing like being in a flooded green timber forest during duck season, I absolutely love everything about it! And OT, I agree, you need to get down here and get you some of this! I'll take ya anytime! I have to warn you though, this is highly addictive and once you get a taste you will be done for. Once your addicted to "Quack" you can't go back! People will forever more look at you like your CRAZY just like they look at me!

That's where your wrong, i see you as normal and can relate to all you said. It's people that spend all there time at home and want nothing to do with the outdoors. Them are the ones I think are crazy. You and I are a different breed and would rather spend all are time away from civilization. Just the thought of spending the day in the woods or swamp or both just changes your whole outlook on life. most people would be content to live life free of wilderness, not us it's the wilderness that keeps us alive. The day I can no longer be free to roam the great outdoors, is the day I start dying.

Hmmm. I like the "suck". I really enjoy the nasty weather and live to be out in the crazyness of it all. I am wishing a more prosperous hunt for you duckman. Is the meat good or is it the challenge that is the reason for the love of hunting duck?

Hmmm. I like the "suck". I really enjoy the nasty weather and live to be out in the crazyness of it all. I am wishing a more prosperous hunt for you duckman. Is the meat good or is it the challenge that is the reason for the love of hunting duck? She's right, duck is delicious! I would have to answer your question kutkota as BOTH. It's a great experience hunting ducks. It's a lot different than most other types of hunting. Namely the water, if you hunt like I do in the flooded green timber forests or swamps. The other major difference is that in duck hunting you don't have to be so still and silent as you do with say deer hunting. Duck hunting can be enjoyed with several of your hunting buddies and you can kinda 'hang out' in the woods, tell stories, laugh, joke around and generally enjoy each others company. Of course you have to be still and quiet when the birds are close and stillness and really good camouflage are important but you can still socialize when the birds are slow. Another really cool aspect to duck hunting is the art of calling, that is what I love to do! I get a huge kick out of "talking" to the ducks. There is just something so special about seeing a group of mallards flying across the sky and blowing just the right notes in just the right sequence at just the right time and convincing all those birds that wherever it was they were going has changed and they now want to come to you! It is an unbelievable sight to watch a hundred mallards fall down through the tree limbs and land in the middle of a decoy spread! I could go on and on about the thrills of duck hunting. I will just say though, if you ever get the chance to try it give it a go. Be careful though! Once you get in on a good hunt chances are you will be hooked and end up like me and so many other...ADDICTED TO QUACK!!! As far as table fare I'll get some of my favorite recipes jotted down for you guys and post a thread in the cooking or recipe section or whatever it's called. It might be later tonight or in a day or two. I gotta get ready to get back out there, gonna hit the river this afternoon!
