I will say I'm pretty partial to CCI (another brand normally available at Dick's but not tonight), but the only 22s I've ever had any misfires on were Winchesters.

I have prolly 1200 through the henry and or the buckmark and no misfires on them. zero. that is both the white box and the m-22 rounds. worst for me has been the goldens. I love cci but usually have to do feds or winchesters because they have no cci or when they do its 4 bucks more per box with 25-50 less rounds in it

No, the cost has not gone up ten fold for any of the metallic components. That is nothing more or less than gouging.

Here is some dutch made 5.56 M855 @just below .80 cents a round. ammoman.com/556x45-62-grain-danish-by-amaThat's still high, but compared to gunbot, etc it's the lowest price out there I can find considering that is the price with shipping included.

Best price for 1k rounds of 5.56/.223 I've found was at Dick's for $419. That stuff was gone almost instantly according to one of the clerks.

Is it my imagination, or is the available ammo supply getting worse? Yesterday I took a "field trip" to two different Walmart stores, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Farm&Fleet. The ammo shelves have been depleted for months; but, yesterday they were all nearly empty, even of the less used sizes/calibers! There still seem to be "Target Loads" of various shotgun calibers, and Dick's had a fair amount of .22lr snake-shot/bird-shot. NOTHING else was on the shelves! What the heck is up with that?

I don't think it's your imagination. Some things are making it out, but others have disappeared.

OK...help me out here...if this is NOT my imagination, then I need a logical explanation for this.
Have the manufacturers slowed or stopped production?
Is someone waiting at the loading docks of the stores and buying truck loads before it gets to the shelves?
I haven't seen lines at the stores at opening time. I also have seen the same lack of availabilty from online sources, and I check several times per day. Either it's not being manufactured or it has to be disappearing before it gets to the retail outlets. Is my thinking wrong?
If it IS disappearing before it gets to the store shelves, then where the heck is it going???

Either it's not being manufactured or it has to be disappearing before it gets to the retail outlets. Is my thinking wrong? If it IS disappearing before it gets to the store shelves, then where the heck is it going??? From what I can tell, it is a combination of things. - The manufacturers will tell you that they are at 100 percent production capacity.
- A check with some folks at Olin that I know tell me the primer material manufacturing is at 100 percent, but it cannot be ramped up without major expenditures in capital equipment. It would not matter if they did invest either as the constituent chemicals required have a finite supply base.
- Components (brass, lead, copper) are there, but they did not have the capacity that the current demand requires to fill.
- Government orders through the military, and DHS has put a strain on the supply chain. Especially that from lake city. These orders were not recent as some speculate. They have been ordering piles of ammunition, but not enough to cause the current shortages in and of themselves.
- People have been buying ammo in unprecedented quantities after obama's re-election.
- The local walmart sporting goods supervisor/manager tells me they are getting in a trickle, but the speculators are there waiting for it, especially .22, when he puts it out. He also tells me there are people canvasing the stores buying it up to put it on gun broker.
All that said, there was a shortage coming regardless. The rat in the wood pile was DHS. While their numbers as said were not enough to choke it by itself, it was all it took to put it over the top and force a run on ammunition. This was exasperated by proposed laws taxing ammo in various states.
