It will get better. When it does Im following WC's advice - stack it high and deep. Wish Id done that when he first said it. The 243, 270 etc, has never really left the shelves (except around here apparently ) If your really wanting one of the 243 AR's suggest stacking that ammo high and deep now before hunting season.

I'm not one for a "wait until......" type approach. It is my suspicion that we will see nasty ammo taxes, and/or contrived shortages, and/or ammo purchase registration, plus inflation. It really isn't a matter of "if" it is "when." I still keep hitting the stores around here to buy what I can at low prices. I refuse to buy at panic prices. It is important to consider how you will distribute your ammo to avoid the risk of losing it all at one time, regardless of how or why the loss occurs. In some areas, you will be considered an wacko extremist if you have only 1,000 rounds of ammo - and you could end up in the news id something happened. (In my area 10,000 rounds earns you the title of beginner Don't wait until you find the perfect hiding spot, start simple. Store a couple of boxes of 100 here and there with trusted family, friends, neighbors immediately. Bury some if you feel the need, just get in motion and spread some out - somewhere. Marc

I get what marc is saying and agree up to a point, but at the same time one should focus on obtaining other items that are still good to get while the getting is good. Guns/ammo last I checked aren't supposed to make up a prepper's entire stores/supply. A good deal is a good deal is a good deal assuming the product is of good use to you. Maybe while there are empty ammo shelves one could go check out the latest good deal on fresh produce that you could buy, and then can later.

Yes, of course. I was only addressing the narrow topic of this thread - ammo availability.

Marc YUP, I am dealing with that now. Thanks for the reminder. Edit: as far as breaking up the storing aspect.

Was in Academy yesterday in Beaumont. Bought two boxes of 223 (steel) at $5.99 per 20. Dont normally by steel but, what the heck? For 6 bucks I figured it will do in a pinch. The only significance is that this was at 430 pm and they had a fair amount left on the bench. They also had a few ARs on hand at the right price. So, maybe its getting a little better. Walmart here is still like Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard.

Sounds like when I went into the local Dick's this morning. I was expecting bare shelves, but instead I found the entire 556/223 section filled up pretty significantly, and the PMC being let out at 6 boxes per customer (as opposed to three). Prices were low compared to the gougers on Gunbroker and what not. Of course: unless you own a 223 Model 700 from Remington or another bolt action in the same caliber the guns needed to fire that ammo are effectively illegal here now.

Academy this morning had a good variety and quantity but only one box per person.. bought a 100 round box of .40 $34 and a box of .380 50 rounds $16. For a friend of course.. Yesterday (and I didn't get in on it, darn it) they had boxes 550 rds, 330 rds, and 100 rds of .22lr. Day before they had boxes of 50 .22lr for almost $3. I said no. They weren't even copper but Remington 'thunderbolt' just lead bullets

It does seem to be getting a 'little' better here, at least in the non WM stores. One gun store yesterday had Federal 223 in the thirty round boxes on strippers for $18 bucks and he let me buy what I wanted and cut it to $15. Also had fifty round boxes of magtec 308 just under $40 a box. Like thywar's place there was 22lr federal fifty count for $2.99 with no limit. I left there with a happy heart and light purse. I think a guy needs to drink while your at the well, not just know where the well was yesterday LOL Hit another place today....he was loaded. I couldn't make a dent in his supply..but I made an effort. ''I shall return!''

Score! Dropped by local Academy tonite and picked up two boxes of 2 3/4" 12ga Spartan 00 Buck for $12.99 ea. Wouldnt be all that great except they were 25 round boxes! Not a bad price for double aught. Edit: Was at Academy in Baytown and the had butt-loads of 00 and slugs of all types and prices. They also had a lot of high cap mags too.

Needed some mouse traps (never had mice until the forest fire wiped out the natural predators) and Walmart had about 40 boxes of steel cased Tula .223 55gr fmj in for $4.97/box of 20. I'm not a fan of steel cartridges for AR 15's, but for $25. I have another 100 rounds of ammo to teach the grand kids proper rifle handling.
The "three box" rule is still in place at our store, but five was OK since they had a bunch. No limit on shotgun shells, so I picked up one box of (25) Estate 12ga, 2-3/4" standard 9 ball 00, for $ 20.
I don't want to get swayed from my personal rules about only buying quality ammo, but for just under $50 out the door with sales tax for 100 rounds of .223 and 25 rounds of 00 buck .................... yeah, I did it.

My favorite gun store has a lot of ammunition available. Their prices are not outrageous except for 22lr ($7 a box) but at least they have some for those that might need it. They do have a limit when they run sales - yep - they still run sales on ammo.
As I have said before - there are 18 Walmarts in the general area. I'm on the road, servicing a large area in my bug business so I pass by quite a few of them. I stop in when I can and check ammunition availability. This week I've notice a lot more available. Not like pre scare availability, but a lot more than the last several months. This week - at three different stores - I picked up three value packs (100 rounds each) of 9, 40 and 45. Hopefully the trend continues.

For some reason the local maw/paw stores are kicking WM and the big stores butts on getting ammo in? Last week they had American Eagle 22lr for 3 bucks for a 50 box. Yesterday they had CCI lr in bricks (500) for forty bucks and no limit. Still a little high but available. Fair amount of all hand gun stuff. NO powder to speak of, just odd stuff. Lots better than the bare shelves of the past year. WooHoo. I hope as it returns folks don't try and 'stock' up and cause another self feeding, frenzy. If I can just get enough along to use, and keep the kids happy without dipping into any theoretical stashes, I'll be more than satisfied.
